Facebook 'Smart Lists' For Friends Makes Organizing Your Contacts Easier

NEW YORK — It's a modern-day dilemma: You really want your Facebook friends to see that wild party photo of you wearing bunny ears. But you're not so keen on explaining it to your mother-in-law.

Well, Facebook aims to make life easier.

Beginning Wednesday, the social network will make it easier to share photos, posts and links with smaller, isolated groups of people. While the site has allowed users to separate their friends into lists since 2007, this option took quite a bit of work and only a small fraction of Facebook users took advantage of it.

Now, Facebook will automatically group your friends based on whether they live near you, went to your school or work with you. You can read posts or share updates with specific groups instead of dozens, or hundreds, of "friends" at a time. Facebook will use the colleges, workplaces and geographic locations that users share on the site to organize people into groups. Called "smart lists," the feature is optional to use, and the lists are customizable.

"Users don't really want to spend a lot of time creating and maintaining friend lists," said Naomi Gleit, the director of product at Facebook who worked on the feature.

In addition, you can create your own friend groups with as few or as many as you would like, based around hobbies, work projects or relatives, for example.

Listing people as "close friends," meanwhile, will ensure that you will see the posts and photos from the dozen or so friends you care about the most. Updates from these people will feature more prominently in your news feed and you can opt to receive email notifications every time they post something on Facebook, Gleit said.

Conversely, those categorized as "acquaintances" will feature less prominently on your Facebook page, and you will see just big news, such as marriages and new babies.

Facebook's latest move takes a page from Google Plus, the fledgling social network launched this summer by the online search leader. Google's service so far has not threatened to unseat Facebook as the world's biggest online social network. But its sleek design and innovative, privacy-focused features piqued the interest of many Facebook users and critics, helping to foster healthy competition among these Silicon Valley neighbors.

Evanescence Avoided 'The Classic Route' With 'What You Want' Video

Almost since the day she wrote it, Amy Lee has referred to Evanescence's "What You Want" as being "really different" from any song in the band's back catalog. So, when it came time to cook up a concept for the video, well, why would that change?

"We'd been working really fast, and we were still finishing the album and it was almost time to shoot the video, and I didn't have an idea, which is weird for me, I usually have a big vision right away," Lee laughed. "But the song is really different for us, so I knew that I didn't want to go the classic, sort of fantastic, epic [thing]. I mean it's still epic, but we didn't want to go the classic route — I wanted to do something different."

Lee actually invited her sister, Carrie, to the recording studio for a few fresh ideas. "She's a writer, so I was like, 'Would you just sit here with me and listen to the song a couple times and just tell me what you see?' " Lee recalled. "She just started saying things that were right on. She was like, 'This should be in New York. You guys need to do something different, this song feels different.' India's dry run at the Miss Universe contest continued as Vasuki Sunkavalli failed to make it to the final 16 at the Miss Universe 2011 contest here.

Earlier, the 27-year-old was disappointed as she could not pose in her national costume because it was not delivered on time.

India hasn't won the crown since 2000. It was model-turned actress Lara Dutta who had won the crown for India in that year.

Prior to that, Sushmita Sen (who now handles the 'I Am She' franchise which selects India's entry to the Miss Universe contest) had won the Miss Universe title in 1994.

Sugababes' Heidi Range suffers wardrobe malfunction on 'This Morning'

Heidi Range suffered a wardrobe malfunction while performing the Sugababes' new single on This Morning.

The band's longest-serving member was forced to hold her skimpy top together as it fell open during a performance of 'Freedom'.

Range later tweeted: "My shirt popped open in the middle of freedom on This Morning! Had to dance with one arm keeping it together! X (sic)"

During an interview on the ITV1 show, Range also revealed that the group had trouble getting out of their latex outfits after their performance at London's G-A-Y club last weekend, admitting: "It was hard getting it on and off!"

Eddie Cibrian has confessed that he constantly gives wife LeAnn Rimes 'fashion advice'.

Northern Lights actor Eddie and country music singer LeAnn wed in April this year. The couple share a lot with each other, including tips on what to wear when they are putting together outfits.

"I give her fashion advice all the time," Eddie told E! Online at Monique Lhuillier's recent runway show.

LeAnn does not snub her husband's suggestions. The pair embrace each other's tastes in clothes.

"We both have [given each other fashion advice]," LeAnn said. "I think if we get each other's approval, that's all that matters."

Christina Aguilera Not Being Fired from The Voice

Reports that producers of NBC's The Voice plan to fire coach Christina Aguilera are baseless, says the network.

"There is absolutely no truth to the rumor," Paul Telegdy, NBC Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, said in an official statement.

Aguilera, 30, remains under contract for the second season of the singing competition, which is set to premiere next Feb. 5 in a key scheduling slot following the Super Bowl.

Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will continue to work alongside Aguilera in the coaching chairs.

Stosur stuns angry Serena to win US Open title

NEW YORK: Samantha Stosur out-played three-time champion Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3 to win the US Open on Sunday, claiming the first Grand Slam title of her career in a stormy final.

Stosur kept her composure as Williams erupted in anger at the chair umpire in the second set, dominating the 13-time Grand Slam champion who had reached the final without dropping a set.

She became the first Australian woman to take the title in New York since Margaret Court in 1973, and the first to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon in 1980.

"I had one of my best days and I'm very fortunate that I had it on this stage in New York," Stosur said. "Ever since I started playing it was a dream of mine to be here one day."

Williams arrived in the final after dismantling world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals on Saturday night in a match that dragged toward midnight. "I was more tired than I expected," Williams said. "But I want to give all credit to Sam today ... She played really, really well. That's what you have to do when you play a Grand Slam final."

Stosur, playing her second career Grand Slam final after a runner-up finish in the French Open last year, quickly claimed the opening set, breaking Williams to lead 2-1 and winning the last 12 points of the set as Williams' frustration grew.

Williams, whose powerful serve is a cornerstone of her game, struggled to get her first serves in and Stosur repeatedly made her pay. "She was cracking 'em today," Williams said of the Australian, who was still rolling in the opening game of the second frame when she gave herself a double break point with a crushing return of serve.

Williams saved one with an ace, and appeared to save another for deuce. But the American's shout of "c'mon" as soon as she unleashed her forehand came before Stosur reached the ball, and umpire Eva Asdaraki immediately penalised Williams for "intentional hindrance" and the point and the game went to Stosur. In an interview with the UK's Daily Mail, the older sister of recently-married Petra confirmed tabloid reports that several minions had been sent "up the Amazon" to gather crystal to be turned into a bathtub. "It's completely true," she told the newspaper.

"It’s costing £1 million because I’ve got to reinforce the floor and I’ve had to pay for everyone’s travel and the hauling back and polishing of the crystal. But I spend a lot of time in the bath so it’s worth it."

The socialite, model and television presenter, who was the bridesmaid at her sister's recent £5 million wedding, insists that she has a "grounded" attitude to money, courtesy of her father, a self-made man. "He raised me to appreciate money and not to take it for granted," she says. "I was raised to want to work for a living."

The socialite, model and television presenter is currently in Los Angeles, where she has announced she is looking for a second home "starting at the £100 million mark".

Petra Ecclestone has already moved to the city, having bought the £91 million hilltop mansion previously owned by Aaron Spelling, the late creator of Dynasty and Beverley Hills 90210, three months ago.
