Leila Lopes of Angola is crowned Miss Universe

SAO PAULO: Newly crowned Miss Universe Leila Lopes hopes her victory will allow her to assist her native Angola further escape its history of war and impoverishment and said she plans to focus on combatting HIV around the globe.

Speaking in a timid voice early Tuesday shortly after taking the crown in South America's largest city, the 25-year-old Lopes said that "as Miss Angola I've already done a lot to help my people."

"I've worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs," she said. "I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more."

Responding to questions, Lopes said that she has never had cosmetic surgery of any kind and that her three tips for beauty were to get a lot of sleep, use sun block even when it's not sunny and to drink lots of water. She said her smile was her best weapon in the competition.

Asked about racism in light of the fact that she's one of the few blacks ever crowned Miss Universe, Lopes said that "any racist needs to seek help. It's not normal in the 21st century to think in that way."

Lopes is Angola's first winner. She beat out 88 other competitors to win the title during the 60th anniversary of the world's biggest beauty pageant. She replaces last year's winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

She deftly handled the interview question that is asked of the remaining top five contestants. She was questioned about what physical trait she would change if she could.

"Thank God I'm very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn't change a thing," Lopes said. "I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life."

The first runner-up was 23-year-old Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine and the second runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil. The third was Miss Philippines and the fourth Miss China.

Contestants spent the past three weeks in Sao Paulo, trying to learn samba dance steps, visiting impoverished children and kicking a football around for cameras as the Miss Universe pageant came to Brazil for the first time.

Despite battling against a home country favorite, Lopes won over the audience, speaking in the shared language of Portuguese. Angola, like Brazil, is a former Portuguese colony.

"She captivated the crowd and we were all behind her," said Brazilian Natalie Bursztyn, 20, who was in the crowd inside Credicard Hall where the event took place. "It was great that the judges also saw what the fans saw and gave her the crown. Her dress was beautiful and she knew exactly what to say when they asked her the question about her looks."

Another fan in the audience, Carolina Rocha, said Lopes' win was "well deserved, we were cheering for her all along. Her smile and her friendliness was what set her apart from the others. She also answered her question very well, that likely helped her a lot."

US broadcast journalist Connie Chung was one of the celebrity judges, and said before the competition that she was taking the contest seriously.

"I know my job and I'll be tough, but fair," Chung said. "You have to keep in mind that these women are not objects just to be looked at. They're to be taken seriously. I want to choose somebody I take seriously and the world takes seriously, too."

Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, was hyped for the night.

"It's our 60th anniversary, it's a very big show," she said. "We're anticipating close to a billion viewers from around the world."

Shugart said it was fitting the globe's biggest beauty pageant be held in Brazil at this time, as the nation prepares to host some major events in the coming years.

"I don't think there is any doubt in the rest of the world's mind that Brazil is the place, between hosting the Olympics and hosting the World Cup," she said. "I love the fact we're going to kick it off. I always say we're the 'World Cup' of beauty."

The contestants must never have been married or had children and must be at least 18 years of age and under 27 years of age by Feb. 1 of the competition year.

The pageant, hosted by NBC "Today" anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network's Andy Cohen, was broadcastr live on NBC and distributed to about 170 countries. The contest is co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC, and the celebrity judges included Chung and two prominent Brazilians, supermodel Isabeli Fontana and Indy race car driver Helio Castroneves.

Morales, who is half Brazilian, said that "what's most important is for the women to be beautiful inside and out."

For Cohen, the task of hosting was an easy one.

"It's a fun job. All I have to do is stand there, smile and scream the names of countries," he said.

Sharply dressed women and men jostled for chances to have their photos taken with stars on the red carpet. Some traveled from across the globe to support contestants.

Jehona Dreshaj, 17, arrived from Kosovo to cheer on her sister, Aferdita Dreshaj, who is representing the European country.

"It doesn't really matter the outcome, she is already a winner in our eye and we are so proud of her," she said. "This has been an incredible experience for her and for all of us. It's great for her to be representing our country in an event like this"

There have been no headline-grabbing gaffes going into this year's competition, as opposed to past years that have seen controversies of various stripes. The show itself went off without a hitch.

Some of the contestants have complained to the local news media about the size of bikinis used in some photo shoots, with Miss Mexico Karin Ontiveros saying they were "very small."

That was enough to draw chuckles in Brazil, where women from all walks of life, not just beauty queens, sport barely there swimwear on beaches throughout the country.

Miss USA Alyssa Campanella, from California, failed to end a long losing spell for the US in the competition. An American has not been named Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.

The pageant started as a local bathing suit revue in Long Beach, California, organized by a swimwear company. (AP)

Lindsay Lohan's old new look baffles fashionistas

Lindsay Lohan "nearly caused a riot" at a New York Fashion Week show over the weekend.

The Hollywood actress caused a stir amongst fashion followers at Cynthia Rowley's presentation on Friday night.

According to New York Magazine's fashion bloggers The Fug Girls at The Cut, there was nearly a "riot" when the style-conscious crowd realised who she was.

"The entire room full of journalists sat ramrod straight and let out excited, disbelieving, four-letter expletives as we all realised this was actually Lindsay Freaking Lohan," they wrote on the blog.

Lohan was reportedly mistaken for fashion designer Donatella Versace by the bloggers. However, the star caused a wave of attention when people realised who she was.

"The take-home here for Lindsay should be that we all initially mistook her for somebody much crispier who is thirty years her senior, but we suspect instead she will mentally gloss over that part and focus only on how fast the crowd of blase, already-burned-out fashionistas whipped out their smartphones and overloaded AT&T service," the bloggers continued.

Lohan, 25, was wearing shorts and a flowing white top as she attended the show. She was escorted to her front row seat by several security guards.

According to The Cut, one photographer became a little over-zealous when he spotted Lohan. He went out on the runway to get a closer picture of the star before organisers at the event confiscated his camera and credentials.

"The room applauded, led by Lindsay herself," the website revealed.

Rosie Huntington-launched Burberry's new fragrance

she must do. Having just launched Burberry's new fragrance (called, appropriately, Burberry Body) at Macy's in New York yesterday, we can imagine she must have been able to blag a free bottle or two. Or at the very least nick a spray from the display product when nobody was looking.

But what exactly does Rosie Huntington-Whiteley smell of, anyway? Normally we imagine she smells like fresh-baked rolls or cut grass or something equally lovely, but as she's no doubt slathered in Burberry Body we can do actual research into that question with scent notes rather than just hanging around her house and trying to smell her like we normally do.REad more At FHM

LeAnn Rimes has fashionable husband

Eddie Cibrian has confessed that he constantly gives wife LeAnn Rimes 'fashion advice'.

Northern Lights actor Eddie and country music singer LeAnn wed in April this year. The couple share a lot with each other, including tips on what to wear when they are putting together outfits.

"I give her fashion advice all the time," Eddie told E! Online at Monique Lhuillier's recent runway show.

LeAnn does not snub her husband's suggestions. The pair embrace each other's tastes in clothes.

"We both have [given each other fashion advice]," LeAnn said. "I think if we get each other's approval, that's all that matters."

Eddie definitely approves of his wife's style sensibility. Although the media has been vocal about LeAnn's new look in recent months, Eddie does not see what all the fuss is about.

"I'm not sure why [LeAnn was being criticised for her looks]" Eddie said recently. "I think she looks great."

Eddie's newest television series The Playboy Club premieres in the US on September 19.(Music-News)

Elisabetta Canalis Gets Naked for PETA

Elisabetta Canalis is definitely coming out of her post-breakup shell. The Italian model, actress and Dancing with the Stars contestant bares all in a brand-new anti-fur ad for PETA, released Friday.

In the stunning shot, Canalis, 32, shows off her flawless figure for PETA's famous "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign.

"I decided to go nude because I think that nudity always creates a big reaction," said Canalis, who split with George Clooney over the summer. "That is what is required to keep people's attention on such a brutal practice. These poor animals are electrocuted, skinned alive, drowned, and bludgeoned just for the sake of fashion."

She implores: "Don't buy fur...Even a little trim - your gloves or your bag or your jackets. You must remember that animals don't have a voice. You must be their voice. Never be afraid to speak up."

Meanwhile, as Canalis mends from her Clooney split, she's keeping busy -- and in incredible shape -- with rigorous DWTS training. "I have a very strict teacher," she told Italy's Chi magazine. "We practice for six hours a day!" (US MAGAZINE )

The “Cruel Intentions” actress is pictured wearing nothing but lacy panties and a baggy sweater, and in her interview she sings the praises of her husband Jim Toth.

Reese gushes, “I got lucky. I did. I got very lucky. He’s so wonderful with the children. I’m very blessed.”

She also noted that splitting with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe was one of her life’s biggest challenges. "I was hard on myself when I got divorced. Somebody close to me once said, 'Oh, no man will ever accept your children.' And I just thought it was the most horrifying thing someone has ever said to me in my entire life."

"And until I got remarried, I don't think I realized how stressed I was. I feel so much relief. I don't think I realized how stressed I was being a single parent. It was really, really stressful. It's not easy on anybody. It's really traumatic.” Read mnroe at Gossip Center

Perfect face for Hudson jeans

GEORGIA MAY JAGGER really is the perfect face for Hudson jeans, owning an impressive 150 pairs herself.

"I wear jeans every day," she told us. "I like to wear them with T-shirts and boots, or when I go out with heels. I've inherited more of my mother's style, I wear a lot of her clothes but my father also has a great sense of style. Mum gives me lots of stuff from her Studio 54 days, like sequined hot pants."

Jagger, whose favourite designers include Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen, currently stars alongside Patrick Schwarzenegger in the denim brand's new autumn/winter 2011-12 campaign. Inspired by Andy Warhol's Screen Tests, the label has created three short films - to be premiered on Hudson's Facebook page tomorrow at 5pm. Users will then be able to chat to Georgia and Patrick via a live Twitter chat, also featuring VOGUE.COM editor Dolly Jones.

"I love the fit of Hudson jeans, they always look good on the bum and there are so many classic styles in the main range," said Jagger. "It's also been amazing to be given the opportunity to create my own collection with Hudson that show styles I really love."

Jagger shops in a wide assortment of spots, from Liberty to Portobello Road, but her style ethos is simple.

"Wear what makes you feel fabulous, don't just follow trends," she said. "Fashion is a great way to express yourself."

Lady GaGa 'goes natural for Harper's Bazaar cover shoot'

Lady GaGa has posed completely natural and without make-up in a new cover shoot for Harper's Bazaar.

The 'You and I' singer posed for a spread of candid photographs for the publication's October issue and discussed her iconic fashion sense in an interview which accompanied the pictures.

GaGa said of the toned-down shoot: "I don't really view it as 'natural'. I think that artifice is the new reality. It's more about just being honest and sincere to the core of what you do. Whether I'm wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I'm always the same person inside.

"Don't you think that what's on the cover of a magazine is quite artificial? There's this idea that it's all natural, but everything's been staged to look natural. It is also an invention. It's just that my inventions are different. I often get asked about my artifice, but isn't fashion based on the idea that we can create a fantasy?"

GaGa responded when asked if she ever feels exhausted by her outlandish presentation: "Sometimes I do. It all really depends on my mood for the day. But I think the perception that I 'put it on' every day is probably not true."

Bethenny Frankel Inks 3 Book Fiction Deal With Touchstone Fireside

The Bravo star will expand the Skinnygirl Empire with her first novel, “Skinny Dipping.”

Hollywood Reporter
Bethenny Frankel is no stranger to the literary world as the author of bestselling diet books, cookbooks and even a self-help book. Now, the Bravo reality star will try her hand at fiction as part of a new deal with Touchstone Fireside.

USA Today reports that Frankel has signed on to pen a steamy romance novel, Skinny Dipping, as the first of a three-book series for the publishing house.

“It’s about a girl’s journey and what she wants, and trying to have it all. It’s about the lessons and the people along the way, about naysayers and rising above,” said Frankel, 40. “There will be a lot of juiciness and people wondering what it’s based on and if any of it was influenced by my life.”

Skinny Dipping is expected for an April 3, 2012 release through the Simon & Schuster imprint, which previously published her Naturally Thin, The Skinnygirl Rules, The Skinnygirl Dish and A Place of Yes.

Frankel recently spoke out about another facet of her Skinnygirl Empire, after Whole Foods opted not to reorder her line of Skinnygirl Maragaritas. The decision called into question Frankel’s use of the unnatural ingredient sodium benzoate -- a preservative. Read mroe on Hollywood Reporter

Yay or Nay: Charlize Theron’s Wide-Legged Jump Suit

The Oscar winning actress stepped out on the red carpet at GQ’s Men of the Year awards in London on Tuesday, and while we’re loving her hair and make-up, the same can’t really be said for her ensemble. (Although we do love the purple/gray combo).

Donned in this extremely wide-legged, baggy jump suit, she added a bit of contrast by adding a sexy, plunging neckline.

ADELE is the cover star of the October

ADELE is the cover star of the October Englishwoman issue of Vogue. A celebration of all that has come to define the modern English woman, the magazine profiles some of the country's most successful and completely unique female names - from Adele and author Diana Athill to Amy Childs.
Our cover girl, Adele, has won over the world with her heartbreaking voice and her ability to seem as if she very much herself," says Alexandra Shulman in her editor's letter. "One of the interesting facts of celebrity is that we, the admirers, usually find some particular aspect of our favourite stars to focus on and that generally become 'the point of them'. We like them to be a certain way, and often take a long time to accept any change. So Adele's very normality, her down-to-earth determination not to compromise herself, has become as much a part of her USP as, for example, Madonna's constant, deliberate reinvention." Read more

Hey Kardashians, we’re behind you guys sticking with a theme, but this might be taking it a little bit too far. What’s wrong with the word “Collection?” It’s an understated and somewhat classy way of saying that the clothes indicated alongside aren’t some shot-in-the-dark one-off attempt at fashion, but more that they’re part of a full range of clothes developed along similar themes.
