Beautiful Bells - Managing Depth

Another very interesting artist. I'd have to say his sound is mostly chill, downtempo, sometimes hip hop rhythms, sometimes abstract rhythms and lots of samples and effects.

Beautiful Bells is the Alabama-born Justin Peake, who now splits his time between New Orleans and Brooklyn. While primarily a drummer, music has always been at the center of Peake's life, starting with the violin at age 4, and later the piano at age 6, learning drums and guitar in his early teens, Justin's family history is deeply rooted in Jazz. With a broad and eclectic array of musical influences, citing names like Iannis Xenakis, J Dilla, Fela Kuti, Bill Evans, Autechre, John Cage, and many in between, harmonious complexity is the fuel behind many of Justin's multifaceted works.

With more concern regarding the true expression of a musical vision, Peake states that "I don't want to say something musically or artistically that's already been said because...well, it's already been said. The next record will be different. And the one after that will be different too, and on and on. I'm coming at electronic music [based on] what feels good to me." As Beautiful Bells, his forward-thinking beats wax future jazz with ample helpings of homemade samples and improvised melodies, fusing them with synths, as well as instruments both digital and analog. Perhaps it is best summed up by examining the meaning of the name Beautiful Bells-- the root "bell" is used in many languages in the word "beautiful," while the ringing of bells produces some of the most physically complex tones that we observe in the world. "Funny that our word for the most complex of tones means 'beautiful.'" - Moodgadget

OM(usic)FG - Pretty Lights 3 New EPs

"Hot off his recent UK tour, Pretty Lights has announced plans to release three new EPs, the first of which, Making Up a Changing Mind, will be posted online on 2nd March, a week before the US spring tour kicks off.

In an effort to get his music directly to his fans as soon as it’s written, Derek will record the EPs only a few weeks before each release. It’s a pretty gutsy move to set release dates without finished material, but for Derek, who’s been recording albums and immediately releasing them for free on the internet since 2006, setting deadlines like this isn’t a big deal." OM(usic)FG - Mux Mool

A self-confessed nerd? A genius if you ask me. Brian Lindgren aka Mux Mool is preparing to release his first full length album "Skulltaste" March 23rd on Ghostly International. Adult Swim fans might remember his track "Night Court" which appeared on Ghostly Swim in 2007. He's been doing his thing while criss-crossing the US by himself for years. Now he's ready to release what Ghostly calls "a masterpiece of eclectic cohesion: chunky instrumental hip-hop sits next to new-wave anthems and dubby dancefloor bangers, which abut skittery slices of D’nB and made-up video-game soundtracks".

I highly suggest you visit Ghostly for more Mux, including a free EP download. I'm lovin the Death 9000 track.

Sunday School - Pretty Lights

Well, only 3 more years til we can officially start calling this decade the 'teens'. Thats right, welcome to 2010 ATL. Like most of us, I'm not at all sure what to expect this year. For me or for my world. But while 2009 was a tough one for me, I did enjoy a lot of good music and I expect to see things continue to evolve. Speaking of evolution and New Years, I'm sure most of us saw some pretty lights in the sky last night either on TV, in a nearby field, in a city courtyard, or over the swamp in your backyard... and I think you should also hear Pretty Lights. Derek Vincent Smith has been touring for a while now. He just came back to ATL on December 30th promoting his new album 'Passing By Behind Your Eyes' which is available for free download on his website along with his previous two albums! Go getchu some!
