Alvin Lucier - I Am Sitting In A Room

This entry is different than anything we have ever posted on OMFG, and at the same time, it is not so different whatsoever. I have always been interested in Alvin Lucier ever since I was taught about him in a music class a long time ago. Alvin has a piece of work called I Am Sitting In A Room where he records his voice and then re-plays his voice into the room re-recording it. He does this over and over for 15 minutes. The result is that his voice begins to disappear and all that is left is the resonance and space of the room. Truly remarkable, because by the end, all you hear is the resonant tones and harmonies of the room itself.
"I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but, more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have."
Take a listen for yourself.
