Lady Gaga planning MTV surprise

Lady Gaga says her MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) performance will be 'exactly' what fans want.

The outrageous singer has the honour of being the first act on stage at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles this weekend. She's looking forward to it, but refuses to give anything away.

''m really very honoured and excited to open the show. But I won't reveal anything; I want it to be a surprise,' she said.

't will be a continuation of everything I've been doing, and it will be exactly what they want. I'm pretty good at knowing what my fans want me to do.'

The VMAs are renowned for being opened by the biggest artists around. In 2003 Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera famously joined Madonna on stage and gave her a passionate kiss.

Gaga was asked to take part after telling organisers what her performance would be like.

't was even more exciting because I knew that it was based off the performance idea and MTV believing in me as an artist and they have, and I appreciate that, from the beginning. They always allowed me to do my version of pop music and not someone else's,' she told MTV News.

The star is nominated in four categories this year, including best female video for Born This Way and best choreography for Judas.

It's a good week for the singer, who has been named the most powerful female celebrity in the world by Forbes.

The publication has released its annual World's 100 Most Powerful Women list, and Gaga is the highest ranking celebrity at number 11. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey comes in at 14, while the top spot goes to German chancellor Angela Merkel.

With the VMAs just around the corner a number of stars have started recalling their favourite moments from past ceremonies.

Bruno Mars remembers being astounded by a medley of hits performed by Michael Jackson in 1995.

' think one of the tightest performances I've ever seen is Michael Jackson's VMAs. He did Dangerous into like Smooth Criminal,' he recalled. 'He just showed why he was the King of Pop. He's just not human. When you were watching it, he was doing dance moves you have never seen before. He made a moment.'

Lady Gaga: I'm married to loneliness

Lady Gaga has admitted that she is 'married to loneliness'

The controversial singer opened up to Asia's Star TV and said that the time she spends alone helps to make her who she is as an artist.

Gaga has an on-again, off-again relationship with barman Luc Carl but says that her work is her life.

'We wallow in loneliness and solitude our whole lives in search of the answer to hundreds and millions of questions that run through my mind,' she said.

'Yes I'm lonely, but I'm married to my loneliness.'

When asked if she would choose fame or love if she had to pick, Gaga said there would not be a competition between the two.

' would choose my work. I would die without it and I could never be reborn,' she admitted.

Gaga also admitted that her biggest fear was 'missing out on a creative idea because of lack of time'.

Lady Gaga not interested in politics

Lady Gaga likes to keep herself 'separate' from politics and believes that affairs of state 'constrain things'.

The 25-year-old superstar singer is not interested in pursuing a career in politics. When asked if she would be like to become President of the United States for one day, she gracefully declined the possibility.

"Well, first of all, I wouldn't want to be president for the day," Lady Gaga told MTV News Thursday on MTV First: Lady Gaga live television special. "And I say that because I really, for myself, it's important that my message, although it has political implications, I like to keep myself separate. Because politics can constrain things. So our message can be completely free of any politics and we can just surge forward."

Lady Gaga is not shy about pursuing political activism. She has spoken out against the American military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell homosexual exclusion policy before. Some of her music also has implications, with song Americano touching on US immigration issues.

Although she is not interested in pursuing a career in the governmental sphere, she is still very vocal about her political beliefs. Should Lady Gaga hypothetically become president there are many causes that she would stand behind.

"I would find alternative uses of energy, I would make marriage equal," Lady Gaga proclaimed. "And world peace. Well, I would do everything I could with the debt crisis, but we all know that's going to take a little while."

Lady Gaga will be opening the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28.
